They will leak coolant. Either at the "weep" hole or around the shaft seal.
If the cork gaskets are not damaged then the engine block may be cracked. Check to see that the cork gaskets are indeed in place and not damaged.
You will know if you have a leaky water pump because it will be leaking coolant out of the water pump.

Do you have an exhaust leak? Do you happen to have have an exhaust leak or a damaged water pump bearing?
If you are talking about a water pump then the kick-back is what happens when the pump is working and the water is flowing inside the pipe then when the pump stops the water flow suddenly stops as well and the column of water inside the pipe falls back because of gravity, if this is not prevented then the impulsor inside the pump, the seal or both can get damaged.

It is rare for a water pump not to work however a water pump going bad will leak coolant and can be noisy from bad bearings.
In most cases the water pump will start to leak coolant when it is going bad.
You will notice water leaking out of the water pump specifically around the pulley area.
