The word 'sprain' means a joint injury in which some of the fibres of a supporting ligament are ruptured but the continuity of the ligament remains intact which is not the case in a torn ligament in which the ligament as a whole is torn due to injury. So, in a torn ligament case, the functions of structures that are held in position by that ligament are affected. But in sprained ankle there is no such damage done.
Check your ankle for pain by gently rotating your foot. If you are experiencing mild pain, you probably have a mild sprain. Ankle pain that is moderate to severe indicates a sprain that is more serious, or the ankle is broken.
Realize that severe sprains are sometimes so painful that you can't bear to set your foot down on the ground.
Look for swelling around the ankle. The swelling may extend down to your foot or up your calf.
Feel for heat around the anklebone. A warmer-than-normal ankle is a sign of a sprain. A hot ankle suggests a broken bone.
Check for bruising around the anklebone. Bruising is caused by blood collecting underneath the skin. Bleeding under the skin will make your ankle appear discolored within 12 to 24 hours after the injury.
The only way to tell for sure that an ankle is sprained versus fractured is to get an x-ray. Swelling, inability to put weight on the foot and pain can be signs of fractures and sprains.
Signs and symptoms of a sprain ankle include the following:
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain
- Deformity
- Loss of movement/stiffness

It could be either sprained or broken, if in doubt get it checked.
If it is sore it is either just sore, bruised, sprained or broken.
No, it can be sprained without being swollen.
If your foot pops with every step you take and you have a sprained ankle, you need to see a doctor. You may have a broken bone that needs to be reset before it heals up. An orthopaedic doctor should be able to help you.
It probly has a broken leg take it to a vet or it may be sad or depressed

A sprained foot will often induce immediate swelling. It usually happens from coming down on your ankle wrong, or "rolling it." You will notice that with a sprained foot, you can still walk on it, but it is best to elevate it and put ice on it.
A broken bone heals alot faster than a ankle sprain.
sprained or broken leg
