You might experience some loss of power or lagging. If the filter is dirty and/or clogged, insufficient fuel reaches the engine. It can get to the point where the car may not start at all.
If you're in doubt about changing it, go ahead and change it! It's about a $10 part and the job should only take about 30 minutes.

In the 2001 model year Sunfire, the fuel filter is located at the rear of the car, just behind the fuel tank about in the center of the car. Model years will vary, but it will be in the general area, with some years being forward of the fuel tank just off to the left side.

You release it by taking off the fuel filter. Be sure the ignition key is off. About a half cup of fuel will spill.... more if you encounter a siphoning effect.
my 2001 maxima has a permanent filter in the gas tank. you dont have to change it.
