Do you have more then 2 wires on the mass air flow. If you do then its computer controlled
When the mass air flow sensor is bad you will have a rich smell in you car. Additionally, your car will consume more gas as you drive it.
Yes the computer still needs to know the amount of air coming into the engine.
It determines the Mass of the Air Flowing into the engine. The engine computer must know how much air is flowing into the engine to determine how much fuel to inject into the cylinders to get the appropriate fuel-air mixture.

IT'S BEHIND THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND THE FUSE BLOCK ON LEFT SIDE OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT
On a 1994 Caprice, it is under the hood, drivers' side front under the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I don't know about a 94 but for my 95 it is underneath the dashboard in between the steering column and to the left of the ashtray.
it depends on the car's make model and yearAnswerFROM WHAT I KNOW ITS THE 2 END ONES THE OUTSIDE LEFT & RIGHT
if u didn't know the iat or intake air temp sensor is part of the mass air flow sensor located on the air box
A mass air flow sensor, measures the mass(weight/temperature) of the air the engine is taking in. It does this by heating a wire in the sensor to a certain temperature and as the air flows past it cools the wire. The amount of current it takes to maintain the temperature lets the ECM know how much air it ingested by the motor and calculates the amount of fuel that is need.
sometimes oil or dirt can cause them to fail. other times they just go bad. they make a mass air flow cleaner spray, don't know how affective it is, has to be a very dry cleaner, meaning not oily solution.
There many sensors in that vehicle, crank sensor, cam sensor, engine temp sensor, oil pressure sensor, oxygen sensors, fuel level sensor, fuel tank evap pressure sensor, mass air flow sensor, manifold absolute pressure senser and the list goes on. Need to know which sensor you are looking for.
A symptom that the mass airflow sensor is going is that the car has idle, or rpm problems. If your is starting to get inaccurate reads from the airflow sensor, I'll will make improper adjustments to the air/fuel mixture. One way to troubleshoot this is to disconnect the airflow sensor and see if the rpm / idle improves, as this causes the computer to use a default reading because there is no communication with the sensor.
