A Galant has timing belts, normally the belts break if they have not been serviced. As for as jumping time they belt may stretch causing it to run bad or not to run at all. Pull the cover off of the timing belt and check the timing using the timing marks. If they are off your car is out of time.

Could be the Crank Position Sensor (CKP). It's located behind the crank pulley on the 2.4L engine, behind the timing belt. The Timing Belt is also a possibility if it has jumped time. These are both rather complicated to change and should be handled by a professional.
