You will not know. That is why you just change it according to the manufactures recommendations as listed in your owners manual.
fuel filter is recommended to be changed every 15,000 miles
If the fuel pump becomes noisy you can rest assured it is going bad. But, the pump maybe going bad and not make any noise at all. Anytime you have a problem with fuel delivery, first thing to do is replace the fuel filter. After replacing the fuel filter a fuel pressure test will verify the condition of the pump.
i know in 89 240 there are 2 fuel filters. 1st is in the fuel tank , to remove filter you need to knock the spin lock counterclockwise with a hammer and chisel carefully. 2nd fliter is in the fuel line in front of the rear driver tire . theres a securing plate which has 3 bolts. it is a can shape.
Underneath the car, in front of the drivers rear tire you should see a small cylinder thing that hose to metal pipes going into it. This should be your fuel filter. Buy a new fuel filter and compare the 2, and if they match, you know you have found it.
Is it an electronic or mechanical
If fuel filter is plugged car will idle but starve for power as it is getting very little fuel, If fuel pump is bad car will wind over but not start " no fuel going to engine " A little trick I use pound on bottom of fuel tank while engine is turning over if engine starts then you know you have a bad fuel pump
Change the fuel filter first. If that doesn't help, change the fuel pump.
Change it every 50,000 miles and you won't have to worry about it. If it has an in tank filter it should last the life of the fuel pump. If you suspect it is clogged a fuel pressure test at the fuel rail will verify the condition of the filter and pump.

I don't know if it is the same as the ZX5 but the fuel filter in my 2005 ford focus ST has the fuel filter in the fuel tank, because it is an automatic. A manual has the fuel filter in the fuel line and you should be able to find it by following fuel line.
The filter is in the tank, part of the fuel pump module.Answera good possibility is that your 01 is set up the same way as my 97 and in that case, the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump. i haven't taken mine apart yet to find out if i can clean the filter or if it actually needs to be replaced, but if it does require replacement, i know that it costs around $230 from an auto parts store.
