The manufacturer's mileage recommendation has been met. Something like 60 to 100 thousand miles. The appearance of the belt won't usually change, and an inspection won't tell you anything.
If the belt breaks, there's a good chance the engine will be severely damaged. The damage is instant; the valves hit the pistons and bend or break. So unlike a lot of maintenance jobs, you don't want to wait for it to fail. It's not like the serpentine belt (the one you can see.) If the serpentine belt fails, the car won't necessarily be damaged right away (but it might overheat, the battery won't charge, and the Power Steering will be manual).
If you can drive the car, the timing belt isn't broken. An engine will not start or run with a broken cam belt.
The engine timing marks are on the timing belt of the car. It lets you know when it is time to replace the belt.
Car Doesnt Start
The first hint that a timing belt is broken is that the car will turn but will not start. Beyond that you should rplace the timng belt every 100k miles,to avoid it breaking.
If you think your Timing Belt broke DO NOT try to crank your car, if you continue to crank you car with a severed timing belt you will cause more damage. The only way you can tell for sure if the timing belt broke is to remove the upper timing cover and inspect the belt. If you see a naked cam sprocket your timing belt has broken and you will most likely need a top end engine rebuild.
timing belts are fairly easy to fix ,you need the # on the belt to get the right replacement ,go to an auto body shop, they know how to do this job.
