Some fish can be viewed to be determined, as in color variations and/or body differences. In most viewable differences with color, the males are more often than not the more colorful of the two sexes. Males also tend to be bigger in most fish (one exception comes to mind are guppies). In some fish the tail fins are different between the sexes such as with guppies and betta fish where the males have long tails while the females have short tails. And then anal fins are key factors with sexing some fish. They are the rear most fins of a fish located near the base of the tail. With one sex being more pointed than the other. Yet another way is to Vent a fish. this is done by physically removing a fish and holding it in your hands and turning it upside down to view the vents. In some fish the females have bigger vents than males, and in some fish they can have a different color or even a different shape. It all comes down to what particular fish it is that needs to be sexed.

Male catfish are smaller and narrower than a female catfish. The head of a male catfish is usually much larger then a female's head. Female catfish are wider than males in the belly area, which is needed for carrying her eggs. The female catfish is also much rounder than a male catfish, Male catfish have longer dorsal fins and are much more colourful than a female.
