I'm afraid you can't. Any number of things might cause her to be acting in ways that lead you to think she might be mentally ill. Any amount of reading will just confuse you if you haven't any previous knowledge. The only way to know for sure is to get your GP to refer her to a psychiatrist, who can make a full assessment of her mental state. Most GP's don't know enough on the subject to do it themselves. Of course whether your wife agrees to this course of action is debatable probably, and that would be another problem. If she is behaving very oddly, and/or you think she may hurt herself or others, you have the right (if you live in England) to request that she be assessed under the Mental Health Act, because you are her "nearest relative". You can do this by phoning Social Services and asking for the "duty ASW". They may try and put you off, or suggest you have to go through your GP first, but that is because they are very stretched and a MHA assessment is a lot of work, whatever the outcome. However, you must stand firm and say you know it is your legal right - well, it is unless you are separated from her, when the question of who is the "nearest relative" might be debatable then.

Although your situation is not funny at all I just had to giggle to myself because women have so many moods and makes me think as a woman myself we must be in the constant throws of mental illness.

Just before a woman gets her periods she can become cranky and moody, snap and bark at those around her. Usually the husband or boyfriend gets the worst of it.

Women in menopause (anywhere from the age of 38 up .. no periods) have major hormone shifts which can cause her to cry one minute, laugh the next, tear a strip of you, then hug you to pieces. She may complain she is fat, that she isn't pretty and then comes the words, "Dear, do you think I'm too fat?" Run!!!!! No answer is the right answer.

Sit and talk to you wife and simply ask her why she is so moody. Don't ever mention to her you feel she is mentally ill. Hopefully she can explain herself. If she admits to being depressed gently mention that she should see the doctor and you'd be happy to go along for support.

Good luck Marcy

The rule of the thumb to diagnose mental illnessis: - When you don't do what a reasonable or sensible man would do you are mentally ill. Or you do that a sensible man would not do, you are mentally ill. The intense mental discomfort or distress signals mental illness.
