It's been known since the 18th century that when Venus moves in front of the sun, then translucent fringes can be seen around the planet from which it was suggested that Venus had an atmosphere.

Robot ships have entered the Venusian atmosphere several times and we now know the composition and density of the atmosphere (it's mainly carbon dioxide).
