A bill's series consists of the date and what letter, if any, is next to the date.

The series date is currently linked to the Treasury Secretary in office at the time the bill was printed. A new date is assigned when a new Secretary takes office.

The first bills in a given date series do not have a letter after the date. When a new Treasurer is appointed, a letter is added, so the second issue is series A, the third is B, etc. (make sense?)

This practice is why bills are not dated for their year of issue like coins, only for the team in place at the Treasury Department.

Prior to the 1980s the practice was even more restrictive - a new series was started only when there was a major design change, which hardly ever happened back then. A letter was added only when either office changed hands. For example, the 1935 series of $1 bills was printed from 1935 to 1965 with series letters going all the way up to H.

Can you tell how old a 2 dollar bill is by its serial number and if so how can we find out value?

It's usually enough to just look at the bill's series date and letter (if any) to get an idea of the year or years when it may have been printed. If you want to know a more specific date within that range the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and other sites have tables that can help match a particular serial number / series date combination with the month in which the bill was printed. In general though, the series date and letter are sufficient to determine a bill's value. Please see the Related Question for more information.

How does the lack of a letter designation after the series number affect the value of a Series 1957 silver certificate?

The lack of a letter after the series date simply means it is the first issue of that series. Traditionally the series date is changed when a "major change" is instituted in the bill. Since 1974 a change in the Secretary of the Treasury is considered a "major change" to the bill design. A "minor change," including the changing of the Treasurer, is signified by a letter after the series date. The letters go in alphabetic order beginning with A. See the Related Link "Wikipedia: Series (United States currency)" for more information on currency series dates. See the Related Question "What is the value of a Series 1957 silver certificate" for the value of the bill.

How do you tell how old a two dollar bill is?

The series date is right next to Jefferson's portrait, similar to the place where the date is on a $1 bill. However the series date doesn't say exactly when the bill was printed, just when that particular design began. To get a better idea of the date you need to look at the series letter next to the date and names of the Treasury Secretary and Treasurer, then match them up with the years they both served in their posts. That will pin the bill's issuance to a particular administration. Beyond that, getting an exact date becomes pretty esoteric. You have to start looking at tables of serial numbers and other indicators printed on the bill. Most collectors usually are interested only in the date and series letter.
