Look for droppings, mounds of food stockpiled in corners or behind furniture, places where your food has been gotten in to, holes in the wall or under counters leading to outside, etc. They're not particularly hard to get rid of once you can find out where they're getting in. Good luck. ==Better Answer== If they attack you and bite you in the face. No, just kidding. If you are unsure, but see droppings and crumbs of a food you were certain you did not eat in a small corner, call your local pest patrol. They will help you track them and terminate them (humanely). The cost might set you back a little, but if you do have rats, it's definitely worth the investigation.
When you find mouse poop in places, and you have a hole somewhere usually in a corner that could possibly fit a mouse in it. Check dark places such as a garage, a vent, on top of the fridge, behind the fridge, and all dark corners. Hope it helps!!

I don't know if mice are friendly like rats and hamters are. I know for sure rats are friendly because I got four of them. I guess mice can be friendly if you treat them right. give them treats and alot affection and they will give affection right back to you.
