For the most part, only old cars (pre 1970s.....) require adding coolant directly to the radiator. Newer vehicles have a "reservoir tank" that can be accessed anytime. If the reservoir is below the Full line (or nearing or below the Low line....) - you can add proper antifreeze/coolant (check your owner's manual) directly to this reservoir tank.

I've included the eHow article which outlines this process too....not to be confused, some owner's manuals MAY require "radiator flushing" - this is the only exception when you would add antifreeze/coolant to the "radiator" itself....and only when the vehicle has not been driven.
