I have Dummy's Guide to American history, and there are others, as well.
Also, read some excellent books by Michael Shaara and also his son, Jeff Shaara, that are fantastic explanations of wars that America has been in since the Revolutionary War. The series goes (so far) to the end of World War Two, and I am sure that we will see a book, soon, about the Korean conflict.

You can learn from the past. Humans are the only animal that can learn from the experience of others from the past. This brings a weath of information, thoughts and poetry from the human race to you.
I think both on a personal and a worldwide level, we need to learn from the past so that we can do better in the future.
