The left and the right channel inputs of the stereo are combined(to make it in to a single channel so that it can be made compatible with the AV output which is single channeled) and is given to the audio channel of the AV cable.
Detailed connection:
Each channel consists of a grid and an earth. Combining of channel means, to combine the earth of the left channel with that of the right channel. And similarly grid of the left to the grid of the right. (note that ever and never the grid and earth must be shorted).
