Some weaks to many years
Cirrhosis of the liver involves irreversible damage. The only treatment is abstaining from alcohol, and supporting liver function by not stressing it in other ways. It is possible to live for long periods with liver damage, provided that it is not too far advanced.
Cirrhosis is a scarred liver, normally caused by alcoholism, long-time liver disease. Since the liver is a very important organ, when it fails, you don't have much longer to live unless you get a transplant.
It is Cirrhosis of the liver (but, one can have this disease without being an alcoholic.) Also a person can live with one third of their liver because the liver rejuvenates itself. The liver, the largest organ in the body, is essential in keeping the body functioning properly. It removes or neutralizes poisons from the blood, produces immune agents to control infection, and removes germs and bacteria from the blood. It makes proteins that regulate blood clotting and produces bile to help absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins. You cannot live without a functioning liver. In cirrhosis of the liver, scar tissue replaces normal, healthy tissue, blocking the flow of blood through the organ and preventing it from working as it should. Cirrhosis is the twelfth leading cause of death by disease, killing about 26,000 people each year. Also, the cost of cirrhosis in terms of human suffering, hospital costs, and lost productivity is high.
Life expectancy with cirrhosis is estimated with MELD scoring - Modelling of End-stage Liver Disease. It is an algorithm, based on blood test results and some other factors which is used to estimate life expectancy. Please see related link for MELD calculator.
A person with cirrhosis of the liver can live for many years until they receive a transplant. The chances of survival prior to a transplant depend on the person's ability to get treatment. If a person with cirrhosis does not get a transplant, they will die.
No a person cannot live without a liver
Depends on if it's a live donor or a dead donor. With a live donor only part of the liver is harvested for transplantation, and the remaining part will grow back to (close to) its original size within weeks.
You Cant Live Without Your Liver!
A human being cannot live more than a few minutes without a functioning liver. During a liver transplant operation, a machine substitutes the function of the liver
No human can live without a liver. The liver itself provides 500 functions, and is just as essential as the heart and brain. Without the liver one could not digest food. A few other functions the liver provides are storing vitamins and minerals, and regulating the body's metabolism!
MELD scores are used to estimate life expectancy of individuals with cirrhosis. MELD stands for Modelling of End stage Liver Disease - it is an algorithm based on blood test results and some other factors. Please see related link for MELD calculator.
A human can live without liver though the liver is removed again it grows.
