It is on the left top of the motor on top of the water jacket. It is held on by four bolts. Left from back of motor.
Normally the thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine.
Folllow your upper radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing
Follow top radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing. The thermostat will be inside the housing.
Most vehicles locate that sensor close to the thermostat housing.
Locate thermostat, on 40 HP it is on the left side of the motor near the top of the water jacket, left side from the back. It is held on by 4 bolts. Remove the flywheel cover, then remove the four bolts holding the thermostat/poppet valve cover. Pull out the thermostat. Be sure to note of the direction in which the thermostat is facing before removal. Put in new thermostat in reverse order. You may need a new gasket.
To replace the thermostat on a 1998 Cadillac, locate the area you will be working in. The thermostat is located at the rear of the engine on the drivers side. Then locate the upper hose. Remove the upper hose from the housing and disconnect the unit. You can then safely replace the thermostat piece.

The thermostat is quite easy to locate. It is at the top of the engine at the front. You will see a radiator hose attached to the engine at this location. The thermostat is in the housing it attaches to.
My 97 4.0 Ranger's thermostat is in the front of the engine. I has two bolts you have to take off. I had to replace the gasket. Leaked when I got on it hard. It's called the "thermostat housing. Thermostat is easy to replace. Great engine.
It is under the thermostat housing (or neck) beside the valve cover. A sure fire method to locate the thermostat on most engines is to follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator back to where it connects to the engine.
Locate the upper radiator hose then follow it back to where it hooks to the engine, Where this hose hooks to the engine is called the thermostat housing. There should be 2 maybe 3 bolts fastening this to the engine.
