The thermostat is quite easy to locate. It is at the top of the engine at the front. You will see a radiator hose attached to the engine at this location. The thermostat is in the housing it attaches to.
A 1988 Jeep Cherokee does not have an inertia switch. The fuel system is computer controlled with relays.
In the coolant reservoir up by the firewall.

It is at the rear of the motor. Follow the largest cable from the battery(RED CABLE) to the back of the motor and it will end at the starter.
If you take care of it, a long time. However if you don't, it will break down all the time. A friend of mine has a 88 Cherokee with almost 750k miles, go figure
both hi and low should be on top of the compressor (if the same as 88 4.0).....hope this helps, Mike
There are disc brakes front and back on the Cherokee. EDIT: Cherokees (XJ) have Drum Brakes in the back. Disc in the front i don't know if you were referring to the new Grand Cherokees .. Those have All Disc. Hope it helps. (i own a 88 Cherokee XJ)
