Best Answer

Most inexpensive switches do not have the capability to log into them because they don't need to be managed or configured.

For managed switches that do, either the use of Telnet protocol or a console port will allow access to the switch.

What is layer 2 switching?

This refers to switching at layer 2 of the OSI reference model, for example, Ethernet. A switch looks at the MAC address of each Ethernet frame ("packet", you might say, but at this level the correct name is "frame"), and if it knows that this MAC address is connected at a certain port, the switch will send the information out ONLY through that port. This refers to switching at layer 2 of the OSI reference model, for example, Ethernet. What's the different between an Ethernet bridge and a switch?

The difference between an ethernet bridge and a switch is that the bridge only has two ports, while the switch has multiple ports. When there is a lot of traffic going through the ports, the bridge traffic may get tied up or crash often because there are only 2 ports for information to travel back and forth.
