Thinking of getting a rabbit? Read this!

A rabbit is a great family pet.

You will need ...

• A Hutch
• Hay and straw to nestle inside the hutch
• Rabbit food + vegetables + Dandelions (Rabbits LOVE these)
• Water bottle
• A Cage (run) to put out on the lawn in summertime

Rabbit Rules

1. In the hutch, you need to put layers of newspaper in it's bedroom and also hay and straw. In it's living room you can put sawdust in.
2. It's hutch needs to be cleaned and refreshed once a week and you need to check your bunny's water supply every day.
3. Make sure it is warm enough in winter. You can do this by putting extra hay in the hutch so your bunny is nice and cosy.
4. When it is cold, I put my rabbit in the garage in a smaller, different hutch so he is warm.
5. In the summer, in the day I put my rabbit in an outside run (cage) on the grass, and then I put him in his hutch overnight as it is warm (ish).
6. Also, you can give your pet rabbit left overs. You know, the tips of the carrots you chopped off; or the core of the apples you cut. A personal favourite of my rabbit is the core of a nectarine.

7. If you are thinking of getting two rabbits, don't get two males. In exceptional cases, two males may get on. But pretty much all the other times males will fight and can get very aggressive. Two females are usually fine together, and obviously a male and a female will probably get on really well ( but will most definitely have babies ).

8. Make sure you have the time to give your rabbit care and attention. If you don't, your rabbit will probably become scared of you or angry. Still, a rabbit definitely DOES NOT need as much attention as a dog receives, by a mile!
9. Males and females: It doesn't really matter what gender rabbit you get as both types are still gentle animals. I have a male and he is very gentle to me, yet I have been told that female rabbits are usually more shy and gentle.

I have a pet rabbit and they are super super easy to take care of

They generally only last for about 4-6 years if they live outdoors due to the climate. My rabbit lives inside which is a lot better for their health and he is 8 1/2 years old today!

When they get bored of their cage, take them outside on a specially designed rabbit leash (which you can get from pretty much any pet shop) or let them roam the house, but make sure that you watch over them carefully as they love to get into miscuing :)

Depending on what type of rabbit you have, it is best to keep it in a large-ish cage. Remember a small rabbit such as a Netherland dwarf (which is the easiest to take care of) doesn't need a palace as a cage as it should be given plenty of time to run around.

Rabbit's hate routines. If they are let out at the exact same time every day they get bored. If for some reason they don't get let out at that same time they freak out. It's a good idea to mix up the time when your rabbit is let out, within a 2-3 hour time frame. If they can run around more than once (say in the morning an afternoon on weekends) they would love it but as long as they are let out they don't really mind

Watching a rabbit run around is fun at first but can get boring after a few weeks, so after they trust you, start playing games with them. Same rabbit's love playing with those mice things that are meant for cats. You put it on the ground next to the rabbit, and it may pick it up and thrash it around. Eventually (mine did) it may hand it to you, but don't worry if they don't.

You can also put a light blanket over it and watch it find it's way out.

Have fun playing with your rabbit, and it will love you no matter where it's hutch is. But an indoor hutch is definetly better, away from birds and stray cats, and out of the freezing cold and boiling hot.

P.S. don't worry if it's like 2 o'clock in the morning and your rabbit's not asleep. Rabbits will go to sleep when everyone in the house is in bed and the noise is at a minimum. If you get up in the middle of the night and it's awake, it probably heard you get up. But occasionally they do sleep when everyone's around, but they sleep standing up with their eyes open. You can tell because they breathe more through the chest and their nose doesn't twitch as much

• The best food for them is pellets.
• Sometimes rabbits will eat their own droppings to get the extra nutrients that were left in them.
• The gestation period of a rabbit is 30 days, 32 days maximum.
• Rabbits do not have a specific breeding season, so you can breed them all year round.
• Females are called Does
• Males are called Bucks
• Babies are called Kittens or Kits
• When the babies are born DONT TOUCH THEM. If you touch them, the mother rabbit will kill them.
• If you absolutly have to touch babies, rub your hands in the bedding or on the mother before picking them up.
• Rabbits can sometimes get what is called Sore Hocks. It is caused by walked around in wet bedding, so make sure you clean the cage often.
• Make sure they always have a fresh supply of water.
