I do too have a very round face (poofy cheeks sort) and scene/emo based hair doesn't suit round faces, though you some scene hairdos, without the ridiculous teasing might work well... The dangers are that it could make your face look way larger (not a nice look). Try not to shape the hair too round. But, I'd like to say, don't follow the trend, if you DIY, the most you'll do is look like a poofy potato head.

Well I have really thick hair that goes a little past my shoulders and at night after I take a shower I put my hair in a lose bun and just sleep in it. When I get up in the morning I take it down and wala! nice unpoofy waves...but usually as the day goes on, it gets reallly poofy and frizzy and what not.. so I would suggest putting a good amount of hair spray on it before you leave :)
