You can use one of the following methods:

  • Faster, and more expensive: Make armour or weapons. Take a hammer (it can be on your toolbelt) and metal bars to an anvil. Use the metal bar on the anvil, and choose what items you want to make. The items are usually worth less than the bars, so you'll lose money. Start with bronze bars; at higher smithing levels you can use bars from other metals. There is an anvil right south of the western Varrock bank.
  • Slower, but you can actually make money: make the metal bars ("smelting"). Buy metal ores to a furnace, and convert them to metal bars. At the lowest level, you need to combine copper + tin, to get bronze bars. At higher levels, a single metal is used to make the bar. The experience you get here is slower; as a result, and due to RuneScape's market economics, you usually make money by making bars.
  • Combine with mining: Take some metal bars, for example mithril, into a coal mine. You must also have a stack of nature runes, and a staff of fire (to save fire runes). Mine the coal, then use the "superheat item" spell to convert the mithril + coal into a mithril bar. Or do the same with some other metal. This requires the smithing level required to make the corresponding bar, as well as the magic level required to cast the "superheat item" spell. You'll train magic, mining, and smithing this way, and earn money - but it is relatively slow.

All of the above methods work for non-members. I am not aware of any faster or more profitable members-only methods.
