How do you maintain your kukri?

In order to preserve the quality of kukri blade, use machine oil at least once a month after everytime you use. If rust appears on the blade then clean it with the help of petrol or gasoline. For long life of a kukri blade apply regular oil to the blades after use and then keep it in plastic or polythene bags.

• Apply machine or motor oil on the blade once a month and also if possible every time after use and do not leave fingerprints on the blade.
• When there is rust, first clean the blade with petrol or gasoline and then rub the rust off with the sandpaper, wipe it with the clean cloth and apply oil.
• Before displaying, you can scrub the carved blade by the hand brush which is soaked in petrol, and then wipe it with a clean cloth.
• You can use shoe polish for the leather sheath, wax for wood, brass polish for the brass fittings, and silver polish for the silver once after use to make your kukri look better.
• For the sharpening purpose, you can use sharpening stones for faster and better results.
• After the use of kukri, it may get dirty. You should be sure to clean the dirt that is picked up by the blade’s surface with the dry cloth and keep it away from the water and moist to avoid rusting.
• When the kukri is not in use for a long period, you can apply oil to the blade and wrap it in a plastic or polythene bag and keep it out of the scabbard. You can also do the same for the small knives.
• You should always store the kukri in a dry and normal place.
• There are some cautions that you should avoid while using kukri.
• Care should be taken and you should not expose the scabbard into the sun for a long time as the heating may cause the kukri to shrink and make the blade difficult to draw-in draw-out.
• You should avoid the kukri use on the metallic surface.
• You should keep the kukri away from the water, moist, and the fingerprints.
• You should throw the kukri while using it.
• Kukri should be used for hammering purposes.
