I usually get a whole heap of photos that I want to include in my background. I use a fuzzy eraser, and erase the edges of the photos to make them softer and so they merge into each other. Using a variety of layers, rubbing out edges, you can cut whole characters in your photos to layer them on top of others. Use different fills, brushes, and texts to add to the effect.
