Wow. That is a huge question. But, with a simple answer. Here are a few steps you need to complete before you stormwrite/brainstorm/brainwrite/ whatever.
1. Get an idea of what your novel/story/book is going to be about
2. Know your characters inside and out
3. Know your time and place inside out
4. Make sure you know what is going to happen
5. Think of a title (optional)
6. Design a cover (optional)
But there is a more important rule... and that is:
