I have used Word and Excel to make charts. Another way is to go to a web site that has already made what you are looking for. When I started my search, I spent a lot of time getting familiar with charts. It was only later that I decided I could "reinvent the wheel" and make them my own way. Rootsweb.com has free charts and since they are well established and trusted, you don't have to worry about picking up a bug.
Another two excellent family tree generators are MyHeritage and Legacy. MyHeritage has many more features, but also is a little pushy. Legacy is rather C&D.
