The sides are stiff and the top is flat. The bill is also flat. The military version was usually dark blue with a red top. There was usually an embroidered emblem, such as a grenade, on the center front. The top had lace; the more ornate the higher the rank. The French Foriegn Legion wore a pure white one or a white cover. Civilian police and other government agencies wore a stiff kepi that was black with some white lace or trim. There were different styles but the most common style was loose material that did not stand up at all and the bill was curved.
