The Granny Knot, also known as a Thief's Knot, results from a second step after making an Overhand Knot. The Granny Knot is simply the improper completion of what would otherwise be a Square Knot. The first half of this is properly referred to as an Overhand Knot, but is also called a Thumb Knot and a Common Knot.
So, what you have really asked is how to make an Overhand Knot. This is formed by taking one free end of a line and going once around the same line (often at the other end of the line) and pulling taut. This is the first action done with a shoelace when tying shoes.

Here is one way to do this, assuming you are right-handed. First, place the left string over the right one, go down with it to where you wrap it one time, and pull snugly. That is the first part of the "knot." Then take what is now the left string and fold it into a loop. Then, while holding that loop with your left hand, take the right string, wrap it around the loop and fold it into a loop as you tuck it under itself. Then pull both loops tight.Yes, it might seem more natural to cross the strings in the first stage the other way (right over left), but I explained it as I did to prevent the "granny knot" variation of this slipknot.
