How do you make a simple yo-yo?

There are different kinds of yo-yos.

In crochet, a yo-yo simply means to make a ring (either by using an adjustable ring or by making a small number of chains such as 4 and joining them into a ring), then make ch 3, 15 dc in the ring, working around the circle of chains or the strand of the adjustable ring. If you used the adjustable ring, you can pull on the strand to close the center hole for a warmer yo-yo. Finish off and sew in tails.

In quilting, cut fabric out in a circular pattern, using a running stitch make a quarter inch hem all around it, then gather the material by pulling gently on the threads. You will still have a small hole in the center. Secure your thread. To get an idea of size, your yo-yo will be about half the size of your original circle. For example, a CD would give you about a 2" yo-yo.
