With in Windows, the only semblance of a back-up is through "System Restore" There is, however, a ton of after market programs that offer Drive imaging, system back-ups and some even have burning capability that allows you to burn the image, and then if you replace the hard drive, simply boot the system off the disk, and it re-installed the original system you backed up. Partition Magic, Disk Copy and Norton Ghost, are all great products. They are simple and quick to use, and you don't need a college degree to use them!

There are several methods of creating backup of your files, you can use secondary storage media Like CD, DVD, external hard drive to create backup.

Windows XP have build-in tool called "windows backup and restore" which create backup of all data in .bkf files format.
