With a slip knot on the crochet hook, grasp the knot with your left forefinger and thumb. With the hook in your right hand, put the head of the hook in front of the working yarn. Turn the hook to face the yarn and hook it. Turn the hook back toward you and then down to point at the knot held in your left hand. Pull the hook through the slip knot making sure a loop of the working yarn is pulled through. Do not let the loop fall off the hook.

Following chain stitches are formed by using the hook to pull a loop of the working yarn through the stitch already on the needle.
