A cracker would not have to ask, but it involves looking for the machine code that checks for the registration and the jump address of where it goes when this test passes. Knowing the opcodes and the jump address, the cracker would use a hex editor to overwrite part of the code with the jump command to the desired address. For most modern software, there is more to it than this, like getting around activation.
