In the case of something like stream water or lake water, for example, filtering through a clean paper or cloth filter, followed by boiling at a full boil for at least one minute. Many people say 5, 10, 20 minutes. 1 minute is more than enough.

Water can also be disinfected with small amounts of household bleach (plain, unscented). Use about 8 drops of bleach per gallon of water. Stir and let it sit for 30 minutes. This will kill off bacteria, viruses, and parasitic worms.
