Saying things like this: "You can't make your own glow fuel because it is dangerous and unreliable for the RC car." is a lazy answer.

Firstly - while it is dangerous, its no more so than the chemicals you have under your kitchen sink.

Secondly - Once you get to know the nitro engine you're using, its far MORE reliable to mix your own stuff than to rely on the often poor quality control, and pre-packaged nitro percentages that takes place with hobby shop shelf fuels.

Please note - the initial outlay of expense is high, because pure nitro is NOT cheap, and you'll spend as much on shipping (its a hazmat) as you will on the product itself, if you're not close to a depot for it.

with that said - i make my own in 2-5 gallon batches, and the cost breakdown is approximately 10.00 per gallon. Hobby shelf stuff is 12-15.00 per QUART. A single gallon of nitro will create up to 5 gallons of "glow fuel" - when ordering nitro you can get it in many sizes, including by the gallon. Its more cost effective, the more you buy, but don't make a ton of mix.... if you don't get around to using all of it for a year, the mix will have absorbed water by then and will not be good.

The main ingredients are:

- Methanol - this makes up 65-75% of the mix, so you'll need the appropriate amount.

- Nitromethane - this makes up 15-25% of the mix - or more if you're into RC planes, and such which require a "hotter" fuel.

- Castor oil - nitro RC engines are two stroke, and thus need the oil to be mixed in with the fuel. There is no separate oiling system - it relies on the fuel for lubrication.

Keep in mind that the ratios are just that... go for a higher nitromethane formula, and you have a lower percentage of methanol and castor oil in a given volume.

What is a gas Rc?

Not "Gas". Almost all RC aircraft, boats, and cars catagorised as "Gas" actually run on a methanol based fuel known as Glow fuel. Instead of a spark plug, a glow plug, a red-hot metal coil ignites the fuel. On some large scale models, actual gasoline engines are used.
