How do you make friends with your guinea pig?

Hold the new guinea pig in your hands, getting the scent on you. Pet your old pig lovingly after letting him smell your new pig's scent on your hand. Bring your old pig into a neutral territory (his cage might bring out the territorial instinct,) and sit him on the floor or somewhere safe. Holding the new pig, watch CAREFULLY as you let your old pig come over to check out the situation. If he doesn't, you can try putting them about six inches away from each other, but be ready to remove one if it gets nasty. Keep them in separate cages for a few days, cages preferably close to each other so they can see each other, and gradually lengthen their together time. When they seem to get along (playing, popcorning, eating together, sleeping together; certainly not chattering at each other!) you can leave them unsupervised for a little while. Use good judgement. When you are sure they are friendly towards each other, you can let them be together permanently. Keep the extra cage in case of sickness.

You just need to make sure they are on neutral territory. So, for example, if you have one guinea pig already, and want to introduce a new one, don't just put them in the cage together. Let them meet each other somewhere else - sofa or pen etc.

It may also help if you bath each of them beforehand so that they smell the same, and also clean and disinfect any cage etc so that it has a neutral smell, so the original g-pig doesn't see it as its own territory.

Finally, keep an eye on them at the beginning - most guinea pigs will fight in the 15 mins if they are going to at all, so watch out for it.

Ha ha. Joking aside, dogs have a natural predator instinct to small animals. If your dog is staring at your Guinea like food, then don't let it near it. Mine don't get along, per se, but I've reprimanded the predator like behavior and now they leave them alone. I never would put a guinea pig any where near a dog and leave it without supervision. Better safe then sorry.

To build up a relationship with a guinea pig u have to handle it daily so it gets use to your body.

The way to any wee animal's heart is through their stomach. If you can get them to take food from you (hand feed them) you are well on the way to cementing your relationship

Guinea pigs particularly like fresh fruit and vegetables so start with a variety of small pieces salad veges like tomato, celery, carrot, radish, lettuce etc and fruits like apple, Oranges, grapes, kiwifruit etc.

Begin by placing the tidbit in the hutch away from you and waiting quietly as they eat it. When they have finished, place the next piece a little closer to you and wait quietly again.

Keep this up until your guinea pig will come to the side of the hutch and take the treat from your hand. As it does so say it's name in a calm & quiet manner.

Getting your guinea pig to like you is about developing trust. If you have a regular visiting & feeding routine and don't "grab" it every time you go near it, but coax it out with food, and let it come to you, it won't be afraid of you.

It won't be long until your guinea pig will look forward to you stopping by and will come when you call it's name.

Guinea Pigs are naturalluy herd animals and will like to live together. But sometimes there are 2 dominant guiena pigs and they will fight the only way to stop this is to seperater them. Guinea pigs will best be friendly around other guiena pigs if they are introduced at a ypung age.

When my girl guineapigs didnt get on to start with I put them in seperate cages but put the cages near each other so they could see and smell each other.Slowly I built it up so I could hold one on my lap and the other on a freinds eventually I put them in the play pen together and the grass run for short periods of time.When they seem to get on well you can put them in the cage together but keep an eye on them to start with becasue somtimes guineapigs will attack each other. Forming a bond of friendship with your guinea pig doesn't always happen automatically, however here are a few things you can do which will help you become friends with your guinea pig faster. * Never handle your guinea pig roughly * when holding your pig feed it a food treat such as a tomato or a fresh piece of romaine lettuce (it will start associating you with food; you = treats) * speak to your guinea pig in a soft voice when you are holding/stroking them, that way the next time you are trying to pick them up you can reassure them by using the same voice and they won't be as scared * when they are in their cage, use this same voice to praise your little piggy * never scream or punish your guinea pig (i.e if they pea on you,etc.) if you do these basic dos and don'ts your guinea will soon be very trusting of you.
