A lariat is a special way of tying a rope so that it forms an adjustable loop at the end. The rope is thrown over the neck or leg of an animal and then pulled tight to stop the animal from running. There are several sites that have excellent instructions on how to tie the rope, and how to use it. I am providing a search list so you can choose the site that will help you.

Yes, the noun lariats, the plural form for lariat, is a common noun, a word for any looped rope of any kind.A proper noun is the name of a specific person, place, thing, or a title; for example:Lariat Street, Parkton, NC or Lariat Street, El Paso, TXLariat Saloon, Bullhead City, AZFord F-150 LariatLariat Reading List of the Texas Library Association"How the Cowboy Makes His Lariat" (1917 documentary film) with Pedro Leon"Love's Lariat" (1916 feature film) starring Harry Carey
This has an odd category in sports. The cowboys who developed in Texas got the skills from the vaqueros of Mexico. Lariats and horsemanship came from there.
