Think the guy below has over complicated things! Just get a spot board (wooden board about 3ft square), measure out your sand, cement etc onto the board and mix with a shovel thoroughly. Form a heap then form a hole in the centre. Pour water in and fold the dry mix in from the outside in. Keep adding water until you get the right consistency. Why on earth would you need a 5ft by 10ft box??!! Get a mixer if you are making that much!!

Hand Mixing. A mortar box is used to mix mortar by hand. It is approximately 5 by 10 feet and can be constructed with 2-inch material (Figure 1-2). The box should be as watertight as possible. Use the following steps when mixing by hand:Step 1. Place half of sand in the mortar box. Step 2. Spread the specified amount of lime and cement over the sand. Step 3. Add the remaining half of the sand. This sandwich operation permits a more thorough mixing with less effort. Turn the mixture twice with a hoe, and then pull it to the end of the box. Step 4. Add the water and cut the dry mixture back into it. Continue adding water to obtain the desired consistency

1-18. Retempering. If the mortar has become stiff on the mortarboard because of the evaporation of water, you must add water and retemper the mortar to restore its plasticity. Remember the following:

  • Mortar should be used within 2 1/2 hours after original mixing when the temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
  • Mortar should be used within 3 1/2 hours when the temperature is below 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
1-19. Discarding. It is sometimes difficult to determine if the mortar should be remixed and used. If in doubt, discard the mortar. Ensure you comply with all environmental laws and regulations when discarding waste. Never use mortar after it has been dropped on the ground or contaminated in any way.

3 sand to 1 cement is a basic ratio for mortar. Place the sand in the centre of a board, or on a hard surface you can clean off with a hosepipe, later. Make a hollow with a spade, and place the cement in the hollow. Dry mix by using the spade to toss together, then reform the hollow. Into the hollow pour enough water not to overflow, and use the spade to mix a little at a time, adding water as needed. After thoroughly mixing together, but not too sloppy, it is ready for use.

'Stucco' is basically outdoor plaster. You can use it on any surface that needs livening up with a little texture. It is extremely durable and you can also add colour as necessary o blend in with the existing surface.

The basic components are portland cement, hydrated lime, sand, and water. There are three layers required for any stucco application: scratch, brown and base. The difference between each layer is the proportions of each component of the mixture.

Here is a basic set of quantities for each.

Scratch coat:

1 part portland cement

1 part hydrated lime

2 1/2 to 4 parts sand

Brown coat:

1 part portland cement

1 part hydrated lime

3 1/2 to 5 parts sand

Finish coat:

1 part portland cement

1 part hydrated lime

1 1/2 to 3 parts sand

Each mix is combined with enough water to create a stiff paste with a uniform colour. The best container to mix stucco in is a wheelbarrow as you can move it to where you need it easily too. Just use a spade or a trowel to mix. Make sure that you are in a shaded area to prevent the stucco from drying out too quickly, and only prepare as much as you will need at one time.

There a number of sites to help advise you about applying stucco.

1) Mixing all the components from scratch, you would use the ratio of: 3/1/12: cement (Portland), lime, and sand. This will give you type M mud (mortar). 2) Type M "cement" commonly found at Lowes and Home Depot, is actually a mixture of 3 parts Portland cement and 1 part lime... adding this to sand at the ratio of 1/3 (type M "cement" to sand) will yield the equivalent of type M mud. 3) You have three options: Mixing from scratch as in #1 above... using a semi-premixed type M "cement" and adding your own sand as in #2 above... or purchasing a total premix, such as Quickrete (also found at Lowe's, 7-Eleven, et. al.), that has all the necessary ingredients, "Just add water!" The quality of the end product is proportional to the amount of convienience you are willing to sacrifice.

mortor is a mix of cement & sand in a ratio suited for a specific purpose.

For plastering walls a ratio of 1 part cement to 6-8 parts sand is used depending on the strength required. For brick laying a ration of 1:4 is normally used again depending on the strength required.
