There are several types of donuts. Some are made with a yeast risen dough and others are cake donuts made with a batter similar to cake batter. You can search recipes online to find one that you think sounds good, but in general you will make the dough, cut the donuts into circles and then cut the middle out, deep fry them in oil and then coat them with sugar or sugar glaze. There are French donuts called beignets that are just squares of dough fried and coated with powdered sugar.
Doughnuts are made by frying dough in oil until cooked, and then seasoning with powdered sugar, icing, glazing or whatever taste combination is desired.

To make donut, first you will need to find a good dough recipe. The recipe you use will depend on what type of donuts you want to make. Some are leavened with yeast and others with baking soda or baking powder. For the dough, you will also need flour, eggs, sugar, butter, spices, and so on. With a yeast recipe, you will need to let the dough rise. Then, roll or turn out the dough and use donut cutters. Fry in a deeper fryer with oil heated to 370 degrees. Then, you can leave them plain. Or you can frost them. glaze them, dip them in sugar, or anything else you like.
This is the simplest way to make donuts that I know of. You will need a can of refrigerated biscuits (the kind that comes 4 cans to a package), a frying pan with an inch of oil in it, some white sugar. Separate the biscuits and use a soda cap (from a 2 liter or 20 oz bottle) to make a hole in the center of the biscuit. Drop the holes and donuts into the frying pan of hot oil and fry on each side until golden brown. Remove them from the oil and cool slightly on paper towels. Once they can be handled roll them in white sugar and enjoy! They taste best warm, but are still good cool!

Some stores make their own donuts. They have bakers come in at 3am. In many smaller stores that have a drive thru the donuts are brought to the store already made and then the staff just has to arrange and place them out for sale.
Presumbly, Fred, the baker. His catchphrase was "Time to make the donuts", so it is hard to tell. Presumbly, Fred, the baker. His catchphrase was "Time to make the donuts", so it is hard to tell.
