An exterior angle is 360/n, where n is the number of sides in a polygon. For 12 sides, this is 30 degrees. An easy way to see this is by the matchstick test, a visualization exercise. Start with a regular polygon and a matchstick. Place the matchstick, head first, on one of the sides. Slide it in the direction of the head, turning it as necessary to fit each side. After you've moved it around the figure, it has rotated exactly once for 360 degrees. On a 12-sided figure it turned 12 times, so 360/12 was the amount of each turn. For those who can't visualize a matchstick easily, you can use a pencil and it's eraser end.
