Consider carefully the cause of the dog's barking before choosing a solution. The wrong technique can actually exacerbate the barking problem. For example, if a dog barks because of nervousness or separation anxiety, a shock collar will tend to reinforce the dog's belief that the world is a dangerous and scary place, thereby increasing the dog's barking. See the link below to the Dumb Animal's League for information on the cause of barking and choosing an appropriate treatment accordingly.
The Safest Way To Stop Dogs Barking: Training
I am a part time dog trainer and i think the best way to get a dog to stop barking is to train it to bark! It seems silly but it is totally effective! if you train the dog to bark on command it will only do it when you ask it to. Alternatively you could figure out what causes the dog to bark e.g. the door bell therefore when the door bell rings train the dog to use it as a cue to do something else like go on its bed so when the door bell rings the dog will go onto its bed instead of barking! simple! :D
I hope people will understand the importance of using positive reinforcement rather than scolding or harming dogs!
Another (Safe) Alternative to Prevent Your Dog From Barking
A dog parent can also try safe ultrasonic bark control. When your dog barks the ultrasonic bark control unit emits a high frequency sound that only your dog can hear. Each dog bark triggers the bark control unit to emit the sound. The dog will stop barking when he/she hears it. Soon the dog will realize that their barking causes the uncomfortable noise and will stop barking. The ultrasonic bark control is not recommended in a house with cats since they are also able to hear the high frequency sound.
There are two types of Safe Ultrasonic Bark Controls: Indoor and Outdoor. The Indoor Bark Control unit sits on any flat surface in your house. The Outdoor Bark Control looks like a Birdhouse and can be placed on any outside tree. The device not only looks great for your outdoor decor but an added benefit is controls not only your dog from barking but also your neighbor's barking dog. The Indoor Bark Control unit can be controlled manually or automatically. Manually means you will press the button when you hear your dog bark. Automatic means the device will emit the sound when it picks up the dog bark.
Anti-Bark Collars
First remember that anti-bark collars will NOT fix the problem by themselves. They are a training aid which will be only as effective as the training support you give them. Failure to praise immediately and genuinely the instant the dog stops barking will result in failure to teach the dog not to bark.
There are three basic types of anti-bark collars: shock, ultrasonic, and citronella. Shock collars emit a small current when the dog barks, somewhat similar to a zap of static electricity (depending on the settings on the collar). Ultrasonic collars emit a high pitched sound when the dog barks. This sound is above the hearing range of humans, but not dogs. The citronella collar sprays a mist of citronella scent toward the dog's nose when he barks.
In a comparison of effectiveness of each of these three types of collar, studies have shown that the relative effectiveness of each is:
20% ultrasonic anti-bark collar
44% shock anti-bark collar
89% citronella anti-bark collar
The main drawback of ultrasonic collars in that any dog in range receives the signal even if they weren't the one barking.
The main drawback of shock collars is that some types of barking are exacerbated by the shocks.
The main drawback of citronella collars is having to refill the collar with citronella periodically.
Other thoughts on barking issues:
every time it barks you've got to show it what it is doing is wrong-
if it just barking at nothing don't shout at him or her because they will think you are trying to bark to (just in a different language).
if it is barking at something e.g. the post man try using a bottle- fill a bottle up with buttons or stones and rattle it loudly when ever they bark, the dog will realise they are doing something wrong and hopeffully stop.
Sometimes an unpleasant association, such as spritzing a spray bottle of water at the dog or clapping your hands together loudly right next to the dog's face when it barks inappropriately will work. Never slap or hit a dog though; they don't understand that action anyway, since it is not something a dog would do to another dog.
Re: How I Got My Neighbor's Dog To Stop Barking!
I recently had a really bad situation involving my neighbor's dogs and their barking. I work at night and sleep during the day when people usually don't pay attention to their barking dogs.
I asked my neighbors to quiet their dogs down and they agreed. The dogs are still barking at about the same rate so I am sure that they did not take me seriously.
After weeks of not being able to sleep, I decided to check the internet and found a lot of people that recommended "The Barking Dog CD".
To make a long story short, I popped the CD into my CD player and the dogs stopped barking almost immediately. As on person stated "I almost fell out of my chair when the dogs stopped barking". I totally agree with them. It worked like a charm. The website is at http://www.antibarkingdevice.com if you are interested.
This method should also work on your own dog if you are having problems with your dog. I certainly hope that I was helpful to you.
First find out why your dog is barking excessively. Maybe your dog needs more exercise, such as daily 45 minute walks, on leash with you. Take your dog to an obedience class as this will teach obedience & structure. All dogs need structured exercise with their owners. Daily walks are the best thing. If that doesn't help, tell your dog a firm NO when barking. Find out why he or she is barking. The main reason dogs bark (if not alerting to a strange situation or strange people) is because they are bored. So that is the reason for good structured exercise for at least 45 minutes a day. There is nothing worse than a nuisance barker, does not matter what size the dog is or what breed. They should only bark to alert their owner to a stranger or a strange situation. You as the owner are the Pack Leader and should act as such.
you have to be calm and dont yell, or else they will get scared. you have to call
there name and if they stop give them a treat and repeat this until the dog
get use to it.
There are a number of simple tips you can use to stop your dog from barking excessively. · Walk your Dog more often · Let you dog play with other dogs · Teach your dog barking is OK until told to stop · Praise your dog during quiet time · After your dog stops barking, give him a treat · When your dog barks excessively, correct him immediately Do something to attract his attention o Clap loudly or squirt water in his face
Dogs bark for one of five reasons. Either they are bored. They're hyperactive. They feel neglected. They are warning someone. Or they are communicating.
You will have to find out which one is the cause of the barking.
If your dog is bored, give them new toys, especially chewable ones.
If the dog is hyper, then change their diet and take them for longer walks more often.
If they feel neglected, that's entirely your fault. Dogs need to spend at least four to eight hours a day "socialising" with their human pack. Spend more time with your dog, pay him or her more attention.
Dogs bark to warn people and other animals to stay away from their territory. They do this to protect you, the owner. Letting your dog know everything is okay or training them to not bark at everything that moves will work here.
Dogs bark to communicate with other dogs. To socialise. If dogs had a social network, they'd call it Barkbook, or MyBark, or Barkterest, or Barkitter. Not allowing a dog to socialise with pals on the other side of the town is probably cruel. But again, training can minimise the amount of barking, but it won't stop it. How would you like it if someone super glued your lips so you can't talk to friends?
The best method to reduce the amount of barking your dog does is clicker training. This is a training exercise that involves a hand-held instrument called a clicker. I advise you to do some research into it.
Dogs vocalize to communicate with humans and to express themselves. Start working on problem barking as soon as you can. It's good to teach your dog the speak/quiet commands.
Put all of the bricks away and tell your dog to stop barking by giving him a treat when he does stop barking.
to make you dog stop barking at cars you should hit them .if you love your dog so much and you cant hit him you should get a shock thing.
