To start, you need to know the length of your stride. Generally speaking a person of average height can take a slightly exagerated stride that will be about 1 yard (3 feet). To be more exact, extend a tape measure along the ground and take several strides along it. Adjust your stride to be approximately 3 feet.

When trying to find your distance to the hole on the course, you need a point of known yardage. Most courses these days will have a marker in the center of the fairway at 100, 150, 200 and even the 250 yards from the center of the green. There may also be yardages posted on sprinkler heads around the fairway. Again, all of these yardages are measured to the CENTER of the green.

Find one of these makers that is relatively close to your ball (generally within 25-30 yards). Now imagine a line going from that marker directly to the center of the green. Then imagine a line passing through that marker that is perpendicular to the line going to the center of the green. Also imagine a line passing through your ball that is perpendicular to a line to the center of the green. The two perpendicular lines should be relatively parallel to each other. Now pace the distance between those two parallel lines. That distance can then be either added or subtracted to the known distance of the marker. Add the distance if your ball lies further from the hole than the marker, subtract if it's closer. This total is your ball's distance to the center of the green.

How is yardage measured on a golf hole?

With the improvements in modern day technology the yardage on a golf course is now either calculated with a laser device or with a golf GPS. The laser device used to be the most popular however over the last 2-3 years the GPS has emerged and has been very popular. Years and years ago the distance used to either be paced out or measured with a measuring wheel, and this lead to a lot of innaccuracy.

What is the par on a 245-yard golf course?

Par for a golf course is typically based on the length and difficulty of each hole, not the total yardage of the course. Each hole will have a designated par value, which is the expected number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete the hole.
