A half minute short bulbed clinical thermometer is necessary. See that the Mercury is completely shaken down to 9O°F or so.The bulb of the thermometer should be lightly greased with Vaseline then gently inserted into the rectum at about two inches. An agitated dog can be held by an assistant.Keep the instrument in position for a full minute, remove, wipe with cotton wool dipped in antiseptic, and look at the level.
