It depends where it is, so it is not possible to find an exact answer. If dry, I guess hundreds of years or never. If moist, but clean, maybe some decades. If moist and dirty, like if it is buried in soil, maybe a 10-30 years. If bright/white cotton is left moist for a few days, you can already see brown spots or mildew on them.
