This is kind of a trick question in my opinion because the smartest thing I can think of is to associate with people who have similar goals and allow the group energy to help motivate me to stay on course.
Sometimes I have to remind myself why I am doing this particular thing or goal.
It helps to have a vision of how I want my life to be having achieved this goal.
It helps to associate pleasure and happiness with the achievement of this goal.
It helps to break the goal up into small steps that won't overwhelm me.
It helps to reward myself with every little step toward reaching my goal.
It helps to surrender my goal to my God and ask for help.
Many of us have a tape in our head that tells us "you can't do this" and what we have to do is fight that message. When I was working on my PhD there were times I didn't think I could get it done, but I found a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that summed it all "you can do the thing that you think you can not do." I put this on my computer where I could see it everyday and when I felt I couldn't do it I read that quote. This kept me going and I got the degree finished. I also used meditation when I felt stressed out and did yoga about 3 times a week. Each of these things helped me stay on task and motivated. Remember it is easier to be negative than to be positive. Fight those demons that creep into your thinking telling you that you can't do it.

Strategies school faculty might use to motivate students more interested in social matters than academic pursuits is to make lessons relevant to students in society. Assignments and research that helps students see how they fit into society crosses both spectrums and helps produce critical thinkers engaged with the learning process.

You can motivate yourself by identifying your negative self-talk and learning to forgive yourself. This will help you overcome the harm that negative thinking can cause and motivate you to become the best version of yourself. Positive self-talk is achieved by treating yourself with love, grace, compassion, and kindness. Begin by creating positive statements for the area where you are most critical of yourself. Focus on self-love, health, wellness, or self-assurance to maintain your energy and focus. Examples of this are saying things like, "I am worthy of love and respect," or "I am capable and strong," or "I can handle whatever comes my way." Positive self-talk is about treating yourself as you would a friend or family member - with kindness
