No one can tell when exactly the appendix will burst. It first has to be inflamed. This will usually cause pain, possibly nausea/vomiting, and fever. The pain will be located on the right side of your body, above your pubic bone and below your belly button. If you are having these symptoms, you should absolutely go to the hospital. They will run tests to make sure that you have appendicitis. If it does burst, you run the risk of getting peritonitis, which happens when all the nasty infected contents of the appendix leak out into the stomach cavity. This is extremely serious, and can be fatal. Most likely you will know when this happens, but one of the classic symptoms is a really hard stomach.
As a patient you cannot know if the Appendix is burst. Appendix usually bursts if there is delay in presentation or delay in diagnosis. Clinically the pain will get worse and patient will develop signs of peritonitis with marked degree of guarding, high pulse rate and temperature to suggest perforation.
When you have Appendicitis your appendix gets inflamed. If you don't get it treated it will continue to swell and burst. If you don't get to doctor after your appendix burst it could be life threatening. You will know that something is wrong because there will be a lot of pain in your stomach.
Right lower abdominal pain will usually indicate problems with your appendix. No one is certain when an appendix may burst, but an abdominal CT or ultrasound my show an enlargement or fluid around the appendix. It must be operated on before it bursts as this organ is full of toxic materials that will cause peritonitis and sepsis if it is left untreated.
DO NOT cut open your stomach and take a look
The major sign of acute appendicitis is severe abdominal pain around the bellybutton. This happens at the same time as feeling general 'unwell'; fatigue, hot, loss of appetite and nausea. The pain previously described does tend to progress to the right hand side of the lower abdomen where it increases, the doctor might refer to the McBurney's Point. Ruptured appendix or burst appendix begins with light pain relief followed by the sudden onset of worse pain. It would imperative to receive medical care now, as further delay can lead to severe and life threatening infection, termed peritonitis. At this point the patients previous unwell feeling dramatically escalates into advanced symptoms, where the person will feel completely ill; chills, changes in bowel motion, high temp, complete anorexia, the shakes and vomiting.
