There are two basic ways to locate a planet orbiting another star. The first is by detecting the slight wobble of the star that is created by the gravitational pull of the planet as it orbits the star. This type of test is better at locating large planets that are close to their parent star seeing as how planets invariably have much less mass, and therefore have very little affect on the star itself.

The second method is to simply look at the light coming directly from the star and wait for it to dim. This happens when an orbiting planet passes between the star and earth, essentially creating an "eclipse" type effect.

Which galaxy are the planets on?

Planets orbit stars, stars orbit a galaxy. Planets are not "on" anything. A lot of stars out there have planets - we are just finding out how many now that we have better techniques to find them. So probably all galaxies have at least some stars with planets.

Does a planet orbit a star?

Yes, planets orbit stars. That's what our earth is doing right now.

Are there 20 planets in the universe?

As of now (late 2013), over 700 planets have been found to exist in orbit around other stars, and more are constantly being discovered.

Does inner planets orbit the sun?

If you are talking about Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, these planets all orbit the Sun.It wasn't very long ago that these were the only planets we knew about. But with the development of enormously powerful space telescopes and newer more powerful computers, scientists have now discovered over 300 "extra-solar planets"; planets that orbit other stars. We've discovered so many, so quickly, than we now need to revise our theories on how planets form. We used to think that planets would be rare; now, it looks like a majority of mid-sized stars will have planets.

Which planet has an orbit that is not in the same plane as all the other planets?

There isn't one. They all orbit in roughly the same plane. Pluto orbits in a different plane, but that's not classed as a planet now, of course.

How long does it take the planets to spin on their axis?

That depends on which solar system and planet you are asking about - we now know for planets orbiting other stars.

How much planets do we now?

We know of eight (8) in our solar system, and we know of a few hundred other stars that have planets although we can't actually see the planets.

What other planets have there own planets?

As of now, the only planet known to have its own moon is Earth. Other planets in our solar system have moons but no planets of their own. In our solar system, moons primarily orbit around planets rather than planets orbiting around other planets.

How is Pluto different form the other outer planets?

Pluto is different because it is the only planet with an unusual orbit, instead of a regular circle orbit. It is also so much smaller than the other planets so we now call it a dwarf planet, not a real planet.Sources: my brain :P

What planets around distant stars are called?

Planets around distant stars are called exoplanets. These planets orbit stars outside of our solar system and are detected through various methods, such as the transit method or radial velocity method.

How many planets have been discovered orbiting other stars besides the sun?

45. It's a lot more than that now. It's into the hundreds.

Is there a planet that has no rings or moons?

Two of them in this solar system; Mercury and Venus. Now that a few dozen exoplanets (planets that orbit other stars) have been identified, we're going to have to start being specific about which solar system we mean. Right now, we know next-to-nothing about those exoplanets; only that they exist.
