If you mean if it bites you, shove your hand down its throat. It may sound gross but if this were a life or death problem, you might want to stick with the throat idea.If you mean something else,I don't know what to tell you.
Just ignore the top answer, when a terrier locks on use one hand to hold the muzzle then place the other hand over the nose so the dog can not breath do not pull or hit the dog while locked on it will not let go and you will damage the other dog even more, there is another way using a lever but you would need someone to show you how to do it correctly.
Remember the more you hurt the staff the harder he will grip.
If it is YOUR dog, then simply put two fingers each side of its gums and pry open. If it's likely to bit you then don't do it. Why do you want to open the dogs mouth?
I don't think you can generlise with breeds, all dogs are individuals. I have a staffy bull that was brought up with other animals, I had 2 cats when she was a puppy she used to lay by the fire with them. I now have guinea pigs in open topped C&C cages and she is absolutely brilliant with them. Ofcourse this may not apply to ALL staffordshire bull terriers. It depends how they were treated from puppies.
This question is rather open as it does not indicate what you mean by "type." Do you mean as in color? (e.g. red nose, blue nose, etc.) Do you mean by bloodline? (e.g. Greyline, Jeep, Gotti, etc.) Do you mean by use? (illegal gaming/fighting versus weight-pulling, obedience, etc.) Do you mean by its confusion with Staffordshire Terriers? Do you mean by its official classification? (dog registries, etc.) The American Pit Bull Terrier (herein referred to as APBT), contrary to the answers that were originally listed, is, indeed a breed of dog. The term "Pit Bull" does NOT apply to Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, etc. Those dogs may have similar characteristics to APBT but are not the same dog. The Dogo Argentino is a dog that has a conglomeration of different breeds to create what it is today. As history would have it, the Staffordshire Terrier developed the APBT breed. There are true Staffordshire breeders out there, and the Staffordshire Terrier is the only "pit bull" type of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). History states that the Staffordshire created the APBT in that the Staffordshire was continued to be bred as it stands now, and branches of the Staffordshire spouted off for utility dogs becoming the APBT. There are different "types" of APBT, however. "Blue Nose Pit Bull" is not a breed. It's a Pit Bull exhibiting bloodline characteristics of a "blue nose." The same goes for a "red nose." Some of these characteristics are more prominent in certain bloodlines - as would characteristics for any other breed of dog. (Example - aka no such thing as a "John Smith bloodline." I am using this as an example statement: "John Smith bloodlines create a bigger head on dogs" or "Jane Doe dogs have more of a working drive than John Smith dogs.") NEW ANSWER The term "pitbull" usually refers to the following 3 breeds: 1. American Pitbull Terrier 2. American Staffordshire Terrier 3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier Visit: http://www.pitbull-info-and-training.com/types-of-pitbulls.html
