I have the same problem and am just going to try to open up the door
Pry the latch out with a screwdriver at its side and open hatchback as usual. I used WD40 to keep it from jamming but after winter it got stuck again...
Try using the key to open the lock mechanism while the door is unlocked.

Unlock it from inside the car with the door lock.
To unlock it you have to get to a point in where Tesla is arrested.
They tend to do this if a door is not closed all the way. Check all doors. I have had this happen when my side door or rear hatch was not not closed all the way. Just open and close the doors. If it still continues, check the sensors on the doors.
First thing to check would be the contact switch that the hatch touches when it is in the closed position. It may either be broken or corroded and not sending the proper signal to the warning light.
Key backup?
My 2002 Tribute has the same problem, caused by central locking motor failure in the back hatch.
Try luck at the following links,1. http://pdftown.net/2/SuzukiHatchF5AServiceManual.pdf2. www.onlinefreeebooks.net/.../suzuki/suzuki-hatch-with-550cc-engine-service-manual-pdf.html
no it has to be done by power lock
To manually open the rear hatch of a 2002 beetle can be hard depending on weather the hatch is closed or open. If needing to manually open a hatch you will have to take the plastic cover from the inside of the hatch then push the latch open.
If the key starts the car and you just need to program remote. I just bought a 2000 beetle and had this same problem. Just unlock the rear hatch and lift it up, then unlock driver door with key and push either lock or unlock and it will program the remote to lock, unlock, doors rear hatch and arm alarm
