When a freshwater aquarium is not overstocked, the normal water movement provided by the filtration system will be enough. It is not necessary to bubble air through the water to 'aerate' it. This has very little effect on the oxygen content of the water because the bubbles are in contact with the water for only seconds before they reach the surface and burst; gas exchange occurs on the surface of the water itself. Aeration without a filtration system is pointless - as is trying to keep fish at all without a filtration system. The job of the filter is to process ammonia, which is constantly produced by fish and is highly toxic. Bacteria live in the filter media and remove the ammonia from your tank. This is called the nitrogen cycle and very few pet stores will tell you about it. For more information on how to 'cycle' your tank, try some fish forums. The members are always willing to help.

∙ 14y agoThey are simple diaphragm devices that, as they expand, they suck in air and through the use of a one way valve, as they contract they blow the air out of a tube or pipe outlet. To be most usefull they are connected to a filter which helps remove poisons from the water. They are sometimes used to provide bubbles which make a current but this does very little good.

∙ 7y agoAn unfiltered bowl will have very little oxygen, which is one of the reasons why it's unsuitable housing for any fish.
It's surface movement that oxygenates the water, may that be the outflow of a filter or the bubbles popping on the surface from an air stone (the actual bubbles in the water are just decorative). To have a very oxygenated tank you would need a strong filter partly blowing across the surface of the water, a spray bar if you have a canister filter, a spray bar also lessens current. For fish that don't mind current you can use a powerhead too to blow across the surface - good for fish that like a high oxygen type set up such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows.
So no surface movement = low/no oxygen, lots of broken surface movement = oxygen!
add an airstone to the tank . for this you will need an air stone, airline and a air pump hope this helps
