Painting cabinets is a quick way to spruce up a kitchen without the hefty cost of installing new ones. Repainting anything requires the removal of the old paint before applying new paint, because old, flaking paint will continue to flake, even if a new coat is painted on top of it, and the new paint will then be flaking off along with the old.
How to paint old cabinets:1.) Remove cabinet doors from their hinges. Remove any knobs or hardware.
2.) Lay down doors in a well-ventilated area. Thoroughly clean the doors and boxes.
3.) Sand down all the surfaces well with very fine sandpaper.
4.) Paint on a primer (for oil-based paints use an oil-based primer, if you are using a latex paint use a shellac-based primer).
5.) Using a sprayer or a large paintbrush, paint a thin coat of the color of your choice.
6.) Let the coat dry completely.
7.) Lightly sand the surface again and paint another coat on.
8.) Wait until all surfaces have dried (probably overnight) and attach doors to the boxes again. Add new knobs for a finished look. Enjoy!
Well if you must paint them, you first have ti fill the grain with some type of wood filler. Then they need to be sanded smooth to eliminate any high or low spots in the filler and to make sure the grain can't be seen. Then they should be primed with a good latex primer then painted with the latex of your choice. IF these are kitchen cabinets, you will probably want to use semi gloss or gloss Latex enamel so they can be cleaned.
If you do not want to go to all of that trouble (and ruin the wood) just rub the cabinets down with either Linseed Oil or a good wood oil /protectant.
You will most likely need to remove the old varnish first. This is done by applying a varnish stripper, which is available at hardware stores that sell paint products.
use a really good latex enamel undercoater primer and a really good paint of your choice. lowes has a valspar undercoater primer for bare wood that should work out great.
Paint first. It'll be much easier to get it right and you won't have to worry about taping the cabinets. But, be careful not to scratch they new paint off when you then install the cabinets.
You can find cabinet paint at your local LOWES hardware or any local hardware shop for that matter. but there are alot of different paint, you have to make sure to get the right paint or your cabinets. If you have wooden cabinets you have to get paint for wood and if your house is older it might have metal cabinets, you will have to get different paint then.
Use thinner for that paint.
the cabinets were not properly prepared prior to the first painting. The paint can be "stripped" off using a commercial paint stripper or your best bet is to sand the paint and cabinets down as this will need to be accomplished anyway for any furute paint to adhere properly
You can buy a one-part, or precatalyzed epoxy that will give kitchen cabinets a durable and long-lasting finish. It can be found at most paint stores.
